Weekly Reading Update #2 – April 17, 2022

(Last Updated On: April 17, 2022)

Welcome back to my weekly reading update! My week was pretty chaotic and my reading definitely reflected that. However, thanks to a mini readathon I did this Friday, I ended up reading a lot more than I anticipated! Without any more waffling, let’s talk about my reading week.

What I Read This Week

I quite liked this mini wrap-up section I did last week to talk about what I finished, so I’m doing it again.

As I mentioned above, I did a very relaxed 24-hour readathon. It included sleep, a Netflix rabbit hole, and plenty of things that weren’t reading. But I did also read two books in a day which is pretty good! This readathon made up most of my reading for the week because the rest of the time I was busy doing arts and crafts with kids. It was exhausting and chaotic but also a lot of fun!

My readathon went way better than I expected because I read two 5 star books! Additionally, they were both queer books that filled a hole in my heart.
Aces Wild: A Heist is a fantastic YA novel about an all-ace teenage friend group pulling off a heist in Las Vegas. It’s hilarious and smooth and chaotic in all the best ways. And having a main cast made up of ace people? That truly made my ace heart sing.

Ophelia After All is a book that feels like a hug for queer teens and I loved it so much! It was exactly what I had hoped it would be and more. If you’re interested, you can find my full rambly thoughts in my review here!

So somehow, both of the books I finished during this readathon were books I wish younger me would’ve had access to. As a sapphic ace teen who didn’t have a lot of media representation for either of those identities, it definitely would’ve made my journey a lot easier!

What I’m Currently Reading

My currently reading section has only shifted slightly from last week. As expected from a massive mood reader such as myself, I ended up picking up different books and letting the ones I started fall aside. I’m used to this pattern though and now I’m back to reading these…and more!

I continued reading Pretty Dead Queens at the end of my readathon and am now about 20% into it. I’m still loving it so much! The seaside town setting is wonderful and I love all of the characters…but I trust absolutely nobody. I can’t wait to see how this plays out!

Then, I also started my ARC of Long Story Short. I’m only a few chapters into it but so far, it’s delightful! We follow math genius Beatrice who has to prove to her parents that she can socialize like a normal teenager…at a Shakespeare theatre camp! If she doesn’t tick off a list of teenage experiences, they won’t let her go to Oxford. I love Shakespeare, acting, and enemies-to-lovers stories so I am really curious about how this story develops.

And finally, I’m still reading Very Bad People. To be fully honest, I’ve barely made any progress with it since last week. But that’s okay, I read plenty of other things!

The Week Ahead

This is the part of the weekly reading update where I take a look ahead.

I’m going back to my own apartment tomorrow and then it’s time to get back on the uni grind! I have about two weeks to finally finish the paper I have been dreading. On top of that, I need to figure out topics for my next oral exam and come up with a timeline for my Bachelor’s thesis so I can present that to my advisor. It’s going to be a hectic few weeks and honestly, I don’t look forward to the workload at all. But once that paper is off my list, I hope everything else will feel a lot more doable.

As you can tell, I’ll have quite a lot of work to do…and most of it includes a lot of research and academic reading. So if my reading slows down considerably or you see me reading only short, fluffy, and fun books, that’s why. I’m honestly not sure I’ll have the brain space for much else.

In an ideal world, I would love to finish all of my current reads! If I can manage to build up a reading schedule and read in small amounts regularly, that seems doable. Maybe I’ll make reading part of my nighttime routine again!

Thank you so much for reading this Weekly Reading Update! Overall, I’m really happy with how my reading went this week against all odds! Let’s hope I can keep that momentum even when I’m neck-deep in university work.
