Weekly Reading Update #13 – August 28, 2022

(Last Updated On: )

Welcome back to my weekly reading update! This week, I talk about possibly a new favourite book of the year and rereading a series to prepare for the final book. Curious what books I mean? Let’s talk about it in this week’s reading update!

What I Read This Week

I’ll say it upfront: I haven’t been reading as much as I hoped and I’m cheating a little in this weekly reading update! Because the first book I want to talk about isn’t actually one I read this week!

I'm Glad My Mom Died Jennette McCurdy Book Cover

I read I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy almost entirely in one day. And wow, what a book. In her memoir, Jennette McCurdy writes about her experience as a child actress while chronicling her relationship with eating disorders and her abusive mother.

The book is brutally honest and deeply personal and just a wonderful piece of nonfiction writing. If you’re expecting some kind of tell-all about specific parts of her career, it’s not that.

I listened to the audiobook, read by Jennette herself, and I loved it. It made the book even more impactful and allowed for the humour of her writing to shine through. Because yes, this book is funny at times, though often in a tragic way.

I haven’t really read any celebrity memoirs but I have a strong feeling that they’re not like this. To me, the hype the book has gotten is absolutely justified and I’m so happy that Jennette had the chance to tell her story the way she wanted to.

The Inheritance Games Jennifer Lynn Barnes Book Cover

Next, I reread both The Inheritance Games and The Hawthorne Legacy in preparation for the final book in the series, The Final Gambit!

Honestly, I have a little bit of a love-hate relationship with this series. I love the premise of a girl getting this huge inheritance and a bunch of riddles around it. I adore Avery, the main character.

But the pacing feels off in every book and I don’t give a single fuck about any of the romance subplots, particularly the whole love corner situation.

I guess I’m always mourning what these books could’ve been a little because I feel like they left so much potential on the table! That being said, this series is very fun and readable and I had a great time with my reread.

What I’m Currently Reading

Keen eyes will notice that my currently reading list hasn’t seen much movement. And you’d be correct! Somehow, I just haven’t felt like picking up most of my current reads. However, before September starts, I want a clean slate! That means I either finish the books, DNF or park them in my “not right now” category for a while.

In my last update, I mentioned that I started listening to an ALC of Mindwalker. That hasn’t changed! Except I didn’t read any further for weeks and have decided to simply start over. Luckily, I was only two chapters in so starting from the beginning is very easy. In an ideal world, I’d actually finish reading this today…but that’s probably not going to happen.

Win Lose Kill Die is also still on the list. I just feel like I need to give it another chance before I DNF it…and I am curious to see if my assumptions are right! Unfortunately, I haven’t really been in the mood to pick up a physical book.

The Week Ahead

Let’s take a look at the week ahead…

If you follow me anywhere on social media, you’ll know that I officially registered my undergrad dissertation! My official deadline is October 4th and I am terrified! My big goal for next week is to do a bunch of reading and research so I feel like I know where I’m going.

Judging from my reading speed this month, I’m aiming low and hope to read one book this week. If I manage to read more that’s great! But I don’t want to create some kind of artificial pressure for my hobby.

Being a mood reader, there’s no telling which book is going to be the lucky one. And I know better than to make any predictions because I am a fickle creature and my plans change all the time. I do want to prioritise ARCs though, so I can tackle my backlog.
