Weekly Reading Update #11 – July 17, 2022

(Last Updated On: )

Welcome back to my weekly reading update! I’m in the second week of my reading challenge and things are going slightly downhill. At least I liked all the books I read! So let’s talk about what I read, what I’m currently reading and what I hope to read next in this weekly reading update!

What I Read This Week

Despite my confidence last week, I’ve fallen behind on my reading challenge. I knew this was going to happen. When you’re trying to read pretty much a book a day, every day you don’t finish a book adds up quickly. Luckily, I went into this challenge knowing that I most likely wouldn’t actually manage to read 30 books. So while it is a little sad to lose momentum, I’m not stressed. I read four books this week (and am about to finish number five) which is still way more than I usually read!

My first book of the week was The Haunting of Tram Car 015, a novella that has been on my TBR for a while. I had a lot of fun with it but still like the other Dead Djinn books a lot more.

Next, I continued making my way through the Murderbot Diaries series with book number four, Exit Strategy. This series continues to be phenomenal and I already know that I’ll want to buy physical copies of the books in the future. It’s funny, full of action and the wonderfully snarky personality of Murderbot.

I also finally read the first volume of The Bright Queen comics by Critical Role! The story is incredibly atmospheric and had me hooked immediately. I just started rewatching campaign 2 (while also still watching the first campaign, yes) and the whole Kryn dynasty storyline was one of my favourites the first time around. Getting to know more about a part of a story is always incredibly satisfying for me and this definitely delivers.

Finally, I listened to the audiobook version of City of Shattered Light. It’s a very fun YA sci-fi debut with a surprising amount of action, all the neon-lights goodness and a bunch of scrappy queer kids trying to survive. I didn’t love all of the plot choices and found some of the characters to be a little flat but overall, I had a great time with it! You can find my full review here.

What I’m Currently Reading

As per usual, I am reading way too many things at once. I just like having options, okay?

The book I’ll likely finish today is I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara. This is probably the most famous true crime book. While I have complicated feelings about true crime, I wanted to read this to see if I’d enjoy it. And I am! But probably not for the reasons I’m meant to. I don’t care about the Golden State Killer and the timeline of events all that much (though it is very well presented). Honestly, I am much more interested in the glimpses of Michelle McNamara as a person. What does a true obsession do to a person? What kind of a person gets this involved in trying to find a serial killer? I’m about halfway through the book and curious about what I’ll think about it when I’m done.

Next, I finally started reading These Violent Delights. I’ve had an eARC for ages and started reading this book probably three separate times and it never stuck. But I can feel it, this is the time! I’m not very far in but I love how atmospheric Chloe Gong’s writing is.

Additionally, I’m still annotating Breath by James Nestor at a very slow pace. I’m in no rush with this book so who knows if I’ll even finish it this month.

I also still have All Good People Here on my currently reading list but haven’t actually made any progress this week.

The Week Ahead

Let’s take a look at the week ahead…

I once again have a very busy week ahead of me. I’m going to Berlin for two days to meet friends and pre-celebrate a birthday and then it’s pretty much straight onto the summer camp!

As always, I didn’t get everything done this week that I hoped so there’s still some work left. While I’ll do my best to squeeze in reading where I can, I have a feeling I’ll probably fall more behind. Considering that I definitely won’t have much time to read during the summer camp, it’s looking mighty unlikely that I’ll actually read 30 books this month

However, I’m enjoying my current reads and am excited to continue reading them this week! Getting my reading mojo back was one of the biggest reasons for doing this challenge and I’ve definitely accomplished that.

It’s great that you’re still enjoying your challenge despit being a bit behind! I love The Murderbot Diaries, so I’m very happy to see you like them 🥰 Network Effect is the first full novel and it’s amazing!! I’m not a true crime fan, but I have been intrigued by I’ll Be Gone in the Dark 👀

I went into the challenge fully aware I probably wouldn’t complete it…and now that I’ve fallen behind already I definitely won’t! I don’t even have a completely free day left in the month to binge read haha. I’m going to read Network Effect soon and I can’t wait!! And I’ll Be Gone in the Dark was fantastic, though if you are fully true crime averse, it’s probably not for you. There’s a lot of details about the crimes but Michelle McNamara is very much focused on the victims and treats them with respect and empathy (which can’t be said of a lot of other true crime media tbh). I enjoyed the memoir sections the most, she’s a fascinating person and I wish she could’ve completed the book herself. So yeah, I think it’s worth checking out if you are intrigued!

I’m glad you’re not stressing about not meeting your reading goals. You’re doing so great and you have a busy life! Enjoy Berlin!

Aww, thank you! I’m pretty relaxed about my goals this year in general (mostly because I seem to be failing at all of them haha). But it’s nice to not stress about yet another thing that’s supposed to bring me joy! I’m currently on the train to Berlin and I’m so excited for two busy and chaotic days with friends. Maybe I’ll even find time to squeeze in a bookshop visit or two!

Oooh, I’m loving your Weekly Reading Update series, and I’m glad you aren’t pressuring yourself too much! I know you have a more recent update, BUT I needed to reply to this one because it’s full of books I’m interested in.

I haven’t read P. Djèlí Clark and Martha Wells yet, but Tor.com always has the coolest releases. (I’m a big fan of Tamsyn Muir’s Locked Tomb series.) I’ll have to give the Murderbot Diaries in particular a go!

And I love Critical Role, but I haven’t gotten my hands on their Tales of Exandria comics yet!! It’s so great to know that they’re really atmospheric. Matthew Mercer is the best—what a mind. And he seems to have such a great team for these graphic novels too!
