11 Books I Added to my TBR Recently | A Book Haul

(Last Updated On: )

Over the past few months, quite a few new books have found their way onto my shelves. This haul is a mixture of impulse purchases from sales, anticipated releases, and some holiday buys!

I thought it might be fun to round up these books since I haven’t bought this many physical books in such a short timespan in quite a while. And I’m curious to hear from you, if you’ve read any of these or they’re on your TBR too!

So without further ado, let’s get into this book haul!

Books I Added to my TBR Recently

Silver in the Bone Alexandra Bracken Book Cover

Silver in the Bone

In no particular order, Silver in the Bone is the first book in this book haul. I had been eyeing it at the bookstore for a while but couldn’t justify the price, considering how few physical books I’ve read all year! However, the universe had other plans for me because it was part of a 90% off clearance sale! That’s actually how a lot of books ended up in this book haul…I can’t say no to a sale that good! Silver in the Bone is a YA fantasy adventure inspired by Arthurian legends, following Tamsin Lark, a reluctant Hollower with no magical skills breaking into tombs to search for treasure. This one sounds all kinds of vibey and I’m hoping for all the fantasy tension and magic!

The Cartographers Amy Zhang Book Cover

The Cartographers

Next, in the same sale, I picked up The Cartographers by Amy Zhang. The cover immediately caught my eye the first time I saw it so I used to chance to snag a copy at the clearance bin. This YA contemporary novel follows Ocean, who moves to New York for university but decides to secretly defer and live off her savings to figure out her life. Even though I am quite a few years older than Ocean, I definitely understand the college-age experience of “what even is my life” so I’m curious to see how Amy Zhang explores this perspective. I have high hopes for this one, y’all!

The Grimoire of Grave Fates Hanna Alkaf and Margaret Owen Book Cover

The Grimoire of Grave Fate

One of the most exciting books in this book haul is The Grimoire of Grave Fates, a fantasy mystery anthology created by Hanna Alkaf and Margaret Owen. This one is a murder mystery set at a magic academy. That alone was enough to sell me on it because I love murder mysteries and magic schools! Additionally, I love a book told through multiple perspectives and this one has 18 of them! I think this is such a clever idea for an anthology and I can’t wait to dive into The Grimoire of Grave Fates, solve a murder, and hopefully discover some new authors in the process. Get in babe, we’re going to magic academy to solve a murder!

I Feed Her to the Beast and the Beast Is Me Jamison Shae Book Cover

I Feed Her to the Beast and the Beast Is Me

Would it even be a book haul without at least one truly anticipated release? No, I don’t think so. I Feed Her to the Beast and the Beast Is Me doesn’t just have a great title and gorgeous cover. It also promises two of my other favourite things in fiction: angry girls with unfathomable powers and ballet. Laure is tired of being systemically overlooked as a Black girl in the cutthroat and racist world of classical ballet. So she takes matters into her own hands and enters a pact with a being deep in the catacombs of Paris. However, dark power comes with unforeseen consequences. I am so incredibly hyped for this book!

Their Vicious Games Joelle Wellington Book Cover

Their Vicious Games

We all know I love a YA thriller so another anticipated 2023 release that I recently got my hands on is Their Vicious Games by Joelle Wellington. Rich white people being terrible and a Black girl trying to earn back her chance at attending an Ivy League school in a deadly competition. High stakes, thrilling action and class commentary? Sign me up! I’m really curious where this book goes with its premise because there’s truly so many directions the titular vicious games could lean in. Either way, I am certain that this will have me at the edge of my seat from the first chapter.

The Good Luck Girls Charlotte Nicole Davis Book Cover

The Good Luck Girls

The Good Luck Girls was another one of the books I had picked up multiple times but never bought…and then it showed up on sale! I’m pretty certain the universe was just giving me a push to finally buy all of these books. In the world of The Good Luck Girls, a historical western fantasy, girls are sold to brothels called Welcome Houses where they are made to entertain patrons when they turn sixteen. When Clementine kills her first ‘client’, she and other girls find themselves on the run. The girls fight their way through a harsh landscape, in search of freedom and to reclaim their power. This sounds very unlike the stories I would usually pick up, but I’m curious to see what I think of it!

Murder in the Family Cara Hunter Book Cover

Murder in the Family

Next in this book haul, an adult thriller! I’ve been slowly dipping my toes into the adult thriller and mystery world and Murder in the Family intrigued me when I saw someone talking about it on Instagram. Following a fictitious Netflix documentary series about a true crime case, Murder in the Family is told through transcripts, news articles and other multimedia elements. I love a book with an unusual format and particularly when it comes to thrillers. I’m ready to put my detective hat on with this one!

The Strange Nathan Ballingrud Book Cover

The Strange

We’ve reached the “books I bought during my Sweden holiday” portion of the book haul. I picked up The Strange because the cover caught my eye. And, unsurprisingly with my love for The Martian, I like sci-fi set on Mars! Annabelle runs a diner with her dad, on Mars. After an event called “The Silence” cuts of all communication with earth and the diner is robbed, Annabelle goes on a journey across Mars to recover the only recording she has of her mother’s voice. Her companion? A lonely robot. This book sounds right up my street and I can’t wait to dive in!

Sundial Catriona Ward Book Cover

Sundial

My second holiday pick is Sundial by Catriona Ward. Did I pick this up because the cover looked cool? Yes. But in my growing foray into adult thrillers and horror-vibes, this one seemed like a good fit. Sundial follows Rob, a mother who comes to be scared of her daughter, and thinks she sees a darkness in her that reminds her too much of the life she left behind. Mother and daughter embark on a road trip to Rob’s hometown. But only one of them will make it out alive. I love a complex mother-daughter relationship and this one just sounds so twisted and full of secrets!

How to Find a Missing Girl Victoria Wlosok Book Cover

How to Find a Missing Girl

We’ve almost reached the end of this book haul! One of my newest purchases (and the only audiobook on this list!) is yet another anticipated 2023 release. How to Find a Missing Girl follows a sapphic teenage detective agency as they investigate a string of mysterious disappearances of local girls. Iris’ sister disappeared, and Iris has been digging into the case ever since. But the police warned her, as soon as she turns 18, her meddling will have serious consequences. So with more girls missing and a race against the clock, Iris does her best to uncover the truth. This book feels like it was written specifically for me. I mean, a sapphic teenage detective? That has my name written all over it!

What My Bones Know Stephanie Foo Book Cover

What My Bones Know

Finally, the last book in my book haul is a non-fiction book! What My Bones Know by Stephanie Foo is a memoir about the author’s personal experiences with complex PTSD. In an attempt to heal from her trauma, the author delves deep into the research and psychology of complex PTSD and generational trauma. This book has come highly recommended to me and as someone who enjoys reading memoirs and learning about psychology, I’m really looking forward to discovering what this book holds and what insights I can take from it.
