WWW Wednesday #3 – April 7, 2021
Welcome to WWW Wednesday! Today I have an old and a new favourite and the perpetual struggle of deciding what to read next. If you’re interested in what I’m reading at any given moment, you can follow me on Goodreads and TheStorygraph and keep up to date! Now let’s get into it.
WWW Wednesday is hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words! All you have to do is answers the following three questions:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty—a twenty-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre—took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. Thrown into a profession of gallows humour and vivid characters (both living and very dead), Caitlin learned to navigate the secretive culture of those who care for the deceased.
Smoke Gets in Your Eyes tells an unusual coming-of-age story full of bizarre encounters and unforgettable scenes. Caring for dead bodies of every colour, shape, and affliction, Caitlin soon becomes an intrepid explorer in the world of the dead. She describes how she swept ashes from the machines (and sometimes onto her clothes) and reveals the strange history of cremation and undertaking, marvelling at bizarre and wonderful funeral practices from different cultures.
I’ve been drawn to familiar stories recently (yes, I did also start reading The Martian again…). So picking up Smoke Gets in Your Eyes was a no-brainer. It’s interesting to revisit the first death book I read, having read and learned much more about death around the world and the funeral industry in America. Nevertheless, I enjoy reading it as much as I did the first time, mostly because I adore Doughty’s writing style and voice. It’s incredibly readable and funny while also being emotional and full of compassion.
Recently Finished
Jamie woke up in an empty apartment with no memory and only a few clues to his identity, but with the ability to read and erase other people’s memories—a power he uses to hold up banks to buy coffee, cat food and books.
Zoe is also searching for her past and using her abilities of speed and strength…to deliver fast food. And she’ll occasionally put on a cool suit and beat up bad guys if she feels like it.
When the archrivals meet in a memory-loss support group, they realize the only way to reveal their hidden pasts might be through each other. As they uncover an ongoing threat, suddenly much more is at stake than their fragile friendship. With countless people at risk, Zoe and Jamie will have to recognize that sometimes being a hero starts with trusting someone else—and yourself.
I have found a new favourite! My predictions came true, We Could Be Heroes was a 5-star read for me (my review will follow soon). I fell in love with Zoe and Jamie, their quirks and superpowered adventures but mostly, I fell in love with their friendship. Watching their dynamic develop over time was delightful and I didn’t want the story to end. If you are looking for a soft superhero story that’s more about who we choose to be than big fights, this book might be for you!

Have you ever imagined running away from your life?
Well Birdy Finch didn’t just imagine it. She did it. Which might’ve been an error. And the life she’s run into? Her best friend, Heather’s.
The only problem is, she hasn’t told Heather. Actually there are a few other problems…
Can Birdy carry off a summer at a luxury Scottish hotel pretending to be her best friend (who incidentally is a world-class wine expert)? And can she stop herself from falling for the first man she’s ever actually liked (but who thinks she’s someone else)?
As I’ve found myself reading fanfiction late at night quite a few times recently, I think it’s time for me to read some more romance! I was kindly given an ARC by the publisher and can’t wait to see what The Summer Job has in store for me! Any bets on whether or not I’ll manage to read it before publication day?
What’s the last book you finished? Which book are you currently reading? And do you know what you’ll read next?
I hope you have a lovely day,
