Weekly Reading Update #10 – July 10, 2022

(Last Updated On: )

Welcome back to my weekly reading update! This is number 10 and it’s a beefy one to celebrate the occasion. This week, I’ve already read as many books as I did in the last two months. So you know I’m on a reading high! Let’s talk about the books I read and my reading plans for next week in this weekly reading update!

What I Read This Week

This was the first full week of my 30 books in 31 days challenge and I have to say, it’s going great! I’ve read six books so far and I’m definitely going to finish the seventh later today. I’m proud to say that I’m still on track! So here are the books I read this week.

I used this challenge to finally read the Vox Machina Origins comics! I’ve had them on my kindle for ages now but never read past the first one. I counted the two available volumes instead of every single comic because that seemed to make more sense for this challenge!

As a big fan of Critical Role, I knew that I was probably going to love these. And I did! They’re full of action, very funny and perfectly capture the characters. The story follows the very early days of Vox Machina. In fact, the first volume sees them only just coming together as a group! These pre-stream events come up a lot in the campaign and it was super cool to finally get a more detailed look at what happened. I’m currently watching campaign 1 to hopefully finish it, so this background was extra appreciated.

I also read Iron Widow, a book that was been on my TBR for a while. Unfortunately, it did end up disappointing me.

I loved the world-building and the characters but got a little tired of Zetian’s “not like other girls” vibes. Somewhere along the middle, the book just lost my attention and I found it hard to get to the end.

I still think that it’s a great debut and I see why so many people have loved it! It just didn’t end up being the best book for me and that’s okay.

Over the last few days, I have been speeding through the Murderbot Diaries series and I absolutely love it! Murderbot is such a great character to follow and I love how it slowly begins to like all the humans it meets. I’m super happy I finally got around to this series. I’m listening to the audiobooks on Scribd and the narrator is perfect, 10/10 recommend this series.

By the way, if you would like to test Scribd for 60 days for free, you can use my invite link! It’s totally free (just make sure to cancel if you don’t want to continue using the service!) and if you end up joining I get 30 days added to my own subscription for free!

What I’m Currently Reading

My first current read that I just started today is The Haunting of Tram Car 015. I actually own a physical copy of this book thanks to a friend and I have a feeling I’ll annotate this one when I reread it. However, I’m actually switching between reading and listening to the audiobook! I’m enjoying it so far, though not as much as A Dead Djinn in Cairo. I’ll definitely finish this today, making it book number seven for the week!

Breath by James Nestor is my current nonfiction read and I’m also annotating it! It doubles as my bedtime read because somehow, I like reading nonfiction before sleeping? Not sure what that’s about but I’m just following my mood here. I’m only one chapter in and the book does make some pretty bold claims (like the fact that 90% of people are breathing incorrectly). I’m curious to see where the author takes this!

My current eARC read is All Good People Here by Ashley Flowers. It’s an adult thriller with a journalist main character who returns to her hometown. When a young girl goes missing, she’s reminded of the disappearance of her childhood best friend and sets out to investigate. So far, the setting and vibes feel incredibly American. This isn’t a bad thing, it just means that there’s probably a lot of stuff that flies over my head because I don’t know what small towns in Indiana are like.

The Week Ahead

Let’s take a look at the week ahead…

It’s crunch time, baby! I have a meeting with my dissertation advisor on Wednesday and I feel entirely unprepared. This week wasn’t as productive in terms of uni work as I would have liked. I’m sure it’ll all be fine but hey, anxiety about disappointing academic authorities is in my bones.

I also have a lot of other things to prep before I’m away for a summer camp with 20 kids in the last week of the month. I have games and workshops to prep for that, need to figure out packing logistics and still need to edit two videos for a uni class. So next week is going to be busy!

Ultimately, I’m fairly confident that I’ll still stay on track with my reading challenge. I have enough novellas and generally short books on my TBR! And unwinding in the evening with some reading does sound like a great time.

I am in awe of you doing this reading challenge again, but I am totally rooting for you, even if a busy week is ahead! I really want to read those Vox Machina (and the Mighty Nein) comics as well. Oh dang, budget and spacial restraints in my apartment are a real nuisance.
I hope you are doing well with all your academic stuff and the things you need to/want to do before summer camp! Love these weekly updates!!

haha thank you! It’s looking unlikely that I’ll actually get anywhere close to 30 books but I’ve already read a lot more than I would’ve otherwise and that’s good enough for me. I read all the comics on my kindle (on my iPad or phone actually since the kindle is black and white lol) but one day I’d love to own them physically as well.
