Weekly Reading Update #6 – May 15, 2022

(Last Updated On: )

Welcome back to my weekly reading update! After a few weeks of not reading as much or as consistently as I wanted, I finally managed to get back into a bit of a reading routine this week! And shockingly, I actually managed to finish two books, both of which I loved. So let’s talk about all that and more in this weekly reading update…

What I Read This Week

I Kissed Shara Wheeler Casey McQuiston Book Cover

I finished reading I Kissed Shara Wheeler this week and when I say I loved it, I mean that. This is such a wonderful YA book about secrets, unlikely friendships, finding your place in the world and all the ways we imagine people to be.

It’s delightfully queer and I adored the broad range of queer experiences we get! The story is set in a very Christian town and religion and the various characters’ feelings about it are very much a theme. Casey McQuiston managed to explore that with the nuance it deserved!

I also didn’t expect this book to fall into my favourite genre of “books about angry, mean and maybe insufferable girls” but it very much does. Both Chloe and Shara are complicated and make some dubious choices. I love complexity in my female characters! Let girls be awful people and make mistakes!

There’ll be a full review up at some point in the near future so look out for that

Long Story Short Serena Kaylor Book Cover

I also finally finished reading Long Story Short!

This Shakespeare summer camp coming-of-age story is smart, full of quirky characters and theatre magic and I simply adored it. Shakespeare quote battles that are basically just flirting? Sign me up! All the chaos of theatre and putting together a play? Been there, done that, miss it a lot.

To me, this was the perfect summer read. It’s quick, delightfully funny in unexpected ways and just feels fresh and sweet, like strawberry lemonade on a hot day.

Fundamentally, it’s a story of stepping outside of your comfort zone and opening yourself up to new experiences. Yes, we do get a makeover montage, but it doesn’t take away from who Beatrice is at her core: smart and capable. The plot doesn’t try to squeeze her into a box of who she should be. She gets to learn and grow and change just as who she has always been and I loved that!

What I’m Currently Reading

I cleaned up my currently reading section a little! I ditched everything I wasn’t super feeling because I simply refuse to be stressed out any more than I already am. My Goodreads now has a “not right now” shelf and I love it! It’s a parking space for all those books I know I want to read but that aren’t right for this moment.

I’m still reading Pretty Dead Queens! Actually, I have started from the very beginning. I knew that if I wanted to get the most out of this book, reading it over weeks and weeks wouldn’t do. So I’m trying again now that I seem to have some of my reading momentum back. I’m still incredibly excited to discover all the mysteries that this book hold

Finally, I started reading An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth by Chris Hadfield. It’s one of the space nonfiction books I own and I chose it as my bedtime read on a whim. I’m only a chapter or two into it but so far it’s very enjoyable! As a child, I wanted to be an astronaut…until I discovered that it requires a lot of maths and science and I was no good at either of those. But still, a part of me still dreams of going to space one day so until then, I’ll just read about it instead.

The Week Ahead

This is the part of the weekly reading update where I talk about the week ahead and what I plan to read!

Last week, I mentioned my new goal of reading 50 pages every day. While I didn’t quite hit that every day, I’m quite happy with how my reading is going! Overall, I’m back to reading somewhat consistently and I know from experience that having some momentum is really what keeps me from falling back into slumps.

This coming week, I want to finally finish Pretty Dead Queens and hopefully start (and maybe finish?) another one of my backlist ARCs! But as we all know, I tend to get distracted by other books so we’ll see how that goes.
