Mini Self-Improvement Audiobook Reviews | Sustain Your Game + LifePass
Welcome to a Mini Book Reviews post, nonfiction audiobooks edition! It’s been a while since I’ve reviewed multiple books in one post but I thought combining my thoughts on these two audiobooks would be quite fitting. LifePass by Payal Kadakia and Sustain Your Game by Alan Stein Jr. are both self-improvement books, though with different focuses. Additionally, both are read by their respective authors! Let’s get into what these audiobooks offer, what I thought about them, and who might enjoy them most.
Thanks to Hachette Audio for providing me with ALCs of both these books in exchange for an honest review!
Sustain Your Game – Alan Stein Jr.
Alan Stein is a former basketball coach turned business consultant and Sustain Your Game definitely reflects that history. Drawing from successful athletes and business owners, Alan Stein Jr. explores different strategies to not just perform at a high level but stay there.
Personally, I appreciated the focus on a more sustainable sense of productivity and performance instead of a pure hustle mentality. Sustain Your Game is highly structured, split into three parts with strategies to manage stress, avoid stagnation, and deal with burnout.
This structure gives the book a sense of focus and clarity, instead of main points getting lost between personal anecdotes like it’s sometimes the case in self-improvement books. Additionally, this clear chapter structure makes it very easy to jump around or return to sections you found particularly helpful! While the strategies themselves weren’t anything new to me and I’m probably not quite the target audience for this book, I did enjoy it!
I think these kinds of nonfiction audiobooks benefit from being read by their authors. First of all, it creates a more personal connection to the author, which I find important because I quite like to know who’s trying to teach me something. Second, having the author narrate their own work means the narration is delivered with true passion for the topic. Alan Stein Jr. is able to deliver his strategies and insights with confidence and personality, making for an enjoyable listening experience.
Who is Sustain Your Game for?
Sustain Your Game is for you if…
… you’re someone looking to increase your performance in a sustainable way.
… you are inspired by athletes and entrepreneurs.
… you enjoy books with a clear structure and focus.
LifePass – Payal Kadakia
Where Sustain Your Game is focused on productivity, LifePass focuses on setting goals.
Combining her personal story and the story of how she built the ClassPass company, Payal Kadakia shares steps to setting goals in a way to help you actually reach them.
The book is structured around a series of questions to help guide the listener through the goal-setting process. You’ll definitely want to keep a pen and notebook ready! Additionally, there are plenty of actionable exercises to follow.
Because Payal Kadakia shared quite a lot about her personal story, being able to hear her tell it in her own voice was very nice! Her narration added a layer of authenticity and vulnerability that turned the listening experience into an actual experience, rather than a teaching session.
Even though LifePass didn’t offer me many new perspectives on goal setting, I did appreciate the holistic approach. The book accounts for all areas of life, not just work! Of course, depending on your life circumstances, your mileage with any of these strategies is going to vary greatly.
Who is LifePass for?
LifePass is for you if…
… you like learning from female entrepreneurs.
… you are looking for new ways to set goals and actually achieve them this year.
… you enjoy a softer approach to productivity.
I hope you enjoyed these mini-reviews! Honestly, writing reviews for both of these books at once made it a lot easier for me to think about how they compare to each other, and who the perfect reader might be for each.
