My Summer TBR
It’s official, I’m free from university work! And thus my slightly-longer-than-usual summer begins and I plan to spend a majority of it with my nose in a book. Admittedly, I’m terrible at sticking to my TBRs, but making them is so much fun! So here’s a list of books I’m excited to read this summer, hopefully, it inspires you for your own summer reading.
If We Were Villains – M. L. Rio
Shakespeare, theatre and murder: sounds like my perfect combination! Lots of my friends read and loved this, so I hope I’ll enjoy it as well!
A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder – Holly Jackson
After reading Maureen Johnson’s Truly Devious series, I was in the mood for some more YA mysteries and I just have a soft spot for teenage girl detectives.
A Darker Shade of Magic – V. E. Schwab
I’ll admit it, I have never read a V. E. Schwab novel – blasphemous, I know. I’m looking to remedy that and A Darker Shade of Magic sounded fun (London and magic are all you need to make me interested).
The Scorpio Races – Maggie Stiefvater
I got this book when I went to Edinburgh for a writing seminar with Maggie, so now I own a beautiful and signed edition…that I haven’t read. I just keep waiting for the right mood and while this doesn’t have summer vibes, I’m really looking forward to it!
Stories of Your Life and Others – Ted Chiang
This is the only short story collection I own! I mostly bought it because one of my favourite films – Arrival – is based on it and the team from Lessons from the Screenplay talked about it in a podcast episode. Short stories feel like a great summer read and I hope this is the start of me reading more of them!
Raybearer – Jordan Ifueko
I’ so excited to read Raybearer, everyone I know who has read it seems to absolutely love it. I’ve been reading more fantasy, and from early reviews I know that this book has ace representation, whoop whoop! That’s enough for me to put it on my TBR!
The Starless Sea – Erin Morgenstern
Admittedly, I don’t know much about this book. I know it’s weird and magical and may or may not feature pirates, but honestly, you had me at weird.
Out of Love – Hazel Hayes
This is a debut novel and it’s a romance told in reverse, a concept I found highly intriguing. People told me that already the first chapter made them cry so I’m bracing myself for an emotional rollercoaster.
BECOMING von Michelle Obama
Becoming – Michelle Obama
I bought this as an audiobook because especially with memoirs listening to the authors just adds a whole other level. Additionally, I don’t know much about Michelle Obama’s life so I’m excited to hear her story.
Happy – Derren Brown
Derren Brown is a magician and mentalist and his shows will blow your mind. Happy is an exploration of what makes us happy with a focus on stoic philosophy and I for one could need a bit more happiness in my life right now.
Little Women – Louisa May Alcott
Another classic that I never read, and I haven’t seen the film so far either! But both are on my summer bucket list, so let’s hope I actually get around to it.
